Ecological-economic viability as a criterion of strong sustainability under uncertainty

چکیده
Strong sustainability, according to the common definition, requires that different natural and economic capital stocks have to be maintained as physical quantities separately. Yet, in a world of uncertainty this cannot be guaranteed. To therefore define strong sustainability under uncertainty in an operational manner, we propose to use the concept of viability. Viability means that the different components and functions of a dynamic, stochastic system at any time remain in a domain where the future existence of these components and functions is guaranteed with sufficiently high probability. We develop a unifying and general ecological-economic concept of viability that encompasses the traditional ecological and economic notions of viability as special cases. It provides an operational criterion of strong sustainability under conditions of uncertainty. We illustrate this concept and demonstrate its usefulness by applying it to livestock grazing management in semi-arid rangelands. JEL-Classification: D81, Q01, Q57

Optimal Cropping Pattern Modifications with the Aim of Environmental-Economic Decision Making Under Uncertainty
Sustainability in agricultural is determined by aspects like economy, society and environment. Multi-objective programming (MOP) model has been a widely used tool for studying and analyzing the sustainability of agricultural system. However, optimization models in most applications are forced to use data which is uncertain. Recently, robust optimization has been used as an optimization model th...
متن کاملSustainability, Optimality, and Viability in the Ramsey model
The Ramsey model of economic growth is revisited from the point of view of viability compared to optimality. A viable state is a state from which there exists at least one trajectory in capital, consumption, and reproduction that remains in the set of constraints of minimal consumption and positive wealth. There exists a largest set of viable states, including all others, called the viability k...
متن کاملMeasure and comparison of economic, social and ecological sustainability of farming systems in the Marvdasht plain
Agricultural sustainability refers to the ability of a cropping system to produce, without causing irreversible damage tothe ecosystem. There is an increasing need to view cropping systems and identify management practices in a holisticindicator-based impact assessment. The main objective of this study was to compare and rank the cropping systems of theMarvdasht plain in Fars Province; in order...
متن کاملA Post Keynesian Environmental Macroeconomic Model for Agricultural Water Sustainability under Climate Change in the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia
Climate change has profound consequences for the agriculture of south-eastern Australia and its climate-induced water shortage in the Murray-Darling Basin. Post Keynesian Economics (PKE) macro-dynamics, along with Kaleckian investment and growth theory, are used to develop an ecological-economic system dynamics model of this complex nonlinear river basin system. The MurrayDarling Basin Simulati...
متن کاملBiological Integrity as a Prerequisite for Sustainable Development: A Bioeconomic Perspective
The present paper argues that the operational conditions for Ecologically Sustainable Economic Development (ESED) may be described by a traditional welfare criterion: ESED refers to a process of economic processes that ensure the environmental prerequisites for an efficient evolution of intergenerational welfare. Under the premise of an unknown and unknowable structure of future generations’ we...
